Keanu Reeves is probably one of the very few actors in Hollywood who is as humble, generous, and down-to-earth. Despite his massive success and worldwide stardom, the actor remains true to his roots. And this is one of the main reasons why he has gained the fan following he now has.
Keanu Reeves reveals details about his troubled past
With that being said, Keanu Reeves was not always as good as he is now. Growing up, dealing with his parent’s divorce, moving to different countries, battling dyslexia, and whatnot, Reeves had a harsh and upsetting childhood.
Keanu Reeves Had A Upsetting And Hard Childhood
Keanu Reeves was a troubled teenager
Very few have had such a harsh personal life as Keanu Reeves did. From his parent’s divorce to his father abandoning him completely, the Matrix star had a troubled childhood. The star moved to Toronto along with his mother at the age of 8 and lived there until his teenage years. Even during high school, he was expelled for being a problematic kid who asked too many questions for his own good.
“It was difficult. I went to four different high schools in five years…… It was a very small school and I guess I didn’t fit in. I had conflicts and run-ins with the staff. The principal and I didn’t see eye to eye. I was one of those ‘Why?’ kids – I asked too many questions about everything. I couldn’t stop even if it got me into trouble.”
Keanu Reeves has always valued his alone time and autonomy. Even as a little boy, Reeves would hang out with other lonely kids like him and hated when others imposed themselves upon him.
“I wanted my autonomy, and if you wanted to impose something on me, then you and I would have a problem.”
And hence, being the rebel he was, Reeves got expelled at the age of 16. As harsh as it seemed to him then, he did ironically end up getting the last laugh.
Despite A Harsh Childhood, Keanu Reeves Believed He Grew Up Sheltered
Keanu Reeves has no regrets about his troubled childhood
Living in Yorkville, the John Wick star would get into chestnut fights with other kids for the fun of it. Despite his earlier comments about his harsh childhood, Reeves believes that the chestnut fights were the worst things he had ever done. Soon after moving to Los Angeles from Toronto at the age of 17, the star discovered that his childhood had been comparatively easy and sheltered than the average youth of LA.
“When I see stuff in L.A. now I realize how safe and sheltered my upbringing [in Toronto] was. We didn’t even do graffiti, you know? We’d build go-carts called Fireball 500. I mean we did sling chestnuts at teachers’ heads, and in grade eight hash started to come around, and LSD kinda.”
With everything that he has gone through, he doesn’t seem regretful or upset but instead continues to live life as if it was his last day.
