His career has been consistently controversial, with celebrities Mariah Carey, Moby and Christina Aguilera among those finding themselves at the sharp end of his caustic wit.
And now Eminem has Lana Del Rey in his sights, threatening to ‘punch’ the singer in the new music video for SHADY CXVPHER.
He raps: ‘But I may fight for gay rights, especially if they d**e is more of a knockout than Janay Rice. Play nice? B***h I’ll punch Lana Del Rey right in the face twice, like Ray Rice in broad daylight in the plain sight of the elevator surveillance. ’Til her head is banging on the railing, then celebrate with the Ravens.’
Controversy: Eminem says he’ll ‘punch Lane Del Rey twice like Ray Rice in the video for his latest song SHADY CXVPHER
The 42-year rapper was referring to the controversy surrounding Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice who punched his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City elevator.
After video footage of the incident was posted on TMZ showing Rice seemingly dragging Janay’s unconscious body out of the elevator, the football player was suspended indefinitely by the NFL.
Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, appears in around seven minutes of the 18 minute video which features hip hop artists Crooked I, Joe Budden, Yelawolf, Joell Ortiz and Royce Da 5’9 rapping without any accompanying music.
Improvised: The rapper is ‘freestyling’ in a cavernous amphitheatre, mentioning celebrities including Britney Spears and Anderson Cooper in his lyrics

No prisoners: The Lana Del Rey lyric is relayed shortly after Eminem spouts a derogatory lyric about Anderson Cooper’s sexuality, while Britney Spears is also mentioned
Attacked: Lana Del Rey, pictured in September, has previously expressed her admiration for Eminem
Eminem and Royce da 5’9 both perform at the former Michigan Theater in downtown Detroit.
The Lana Del Rey lyric is relayed shortly after Eminem spouts a derogatory lyric about Anderson Cooper’s sexuality, while Britney Spears is also mentioned.
According to Just Jared, rapper Azealia Banks defended Lana via her Twitter account, writing: ‘But does Eminem know that I will personally punch him in his mouth?!’
The post has since been taken down.
However, Lana has previously expressed her love for the Detroit rapper, telling Popcrush back in 2012: ‘Eminem is the master of lyrics whereas Frank Sinatra is the master of vocals… I f****ing love Eminem.
‘I found out music could be intelligent. He wasn’t just rhyming for rhyme’s sake.’
Eminem has previously denied accusations of misogyny and homophobia in his music.
He told CBS back in 2010: ‘I don’t have any problem with nobody,’ appearing to hint his lyrics form part of his art rather than his actual opinion. ‘This is music, this is my art, this is what I do,’ he said.
And he also complained that criticism of his lyrics has made him feel ‘singled out.’
He said: ‘I felt like I was being attacked.I was being singled out. And I felt like, “Is it because of the colour of my skin? Is it because that, you’re paying more attention? Is it because there’s certain rappers that do and say the same things that I’m saying.”
‘And I don’t hear no one saying anything about that. I didn’t just invent saying offensive things.’
The new video promotes the two-disc Shady XV album which is due out on November 24. One disc will feature greatest hits from Eminem’s Shady Records label, while the other CD contains 12 new tracks from the rapper and his collaborators, according to MTV.
Expressing himself: The rapper has become well known for his controversial lyrics
