The last total solar eclipse visible in North America for more than 20 years brought out a ray of funny posts and puns from NHL teams, including the Canadiens, Sabres, Devils and more.

As the moon eclipses the sun in many parts of the United States and Canada on Monday, social media squads on several NHL teams brought out their flair of creativity.
Here are some posts to X (formerly Twitter) that made the most of the day’s phenomenon:
New Jersey Devils
Eclipse player puns, won’t you come?
Alexander Holtz, who was born eight years after Soundgarden released Black Hole Sun in 1994, is in his first full year playing for the Devils, with 16 goals and 28 points in 78 games.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres enlisted the help of mascot Sabretooth to teach some do’s and don’ts for this big occasion.
It’s overcast in Niagara Falls and Buffalo in the path of totality, but that’s not stopping Sabres fans from observing the eclipse and taking some chirps at their squad.
“We got an eclipse before you made the playoffs,” said one fan on X. And fair enough, with the last total solar eclipse coming in the United States in 2017 and Buffalo last making the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2011.
Montreal Canadiens
You could say the eclipse is a cinematic experience. The Canadiens sure think so.
It’s another creative post by the Habs, who also used the day to discuss which players eclipsed their career highs this season. Juraj Slafkovsky has had no problem setting new highs in his sophomore year, with 16 goals and 45 points in 77 games. But it’s also the perfect reminder to protect Juraj-s with your eclipse glasses, right? Anybody? Who brought crickets in here?
Ottawa Senators
A moment in Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Capitals was just too good to pass up on.
In case you missed it, the game in Washington, D.C., started a little bit earlier than usual, at 6 p.m. ET. Someone in Capital One Arena forgot to draw the curtains, and the setting sun poked through from the concourse and directly at Senators goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.
The rest is history.
Korpisalo had the last laugh, stopping 20 of 22 shots as the Senators defeated the Capitals 3-2 in overtime.
Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets
Seattle and Winnipeg aren’t on the path of totality, but there was a partial eclipse. That said…well…let’s look at the skies in Seattle for its view.
The clouds played spoilers for the partial eclipse in Seattle, so they had some fun with Brandon Tanev’s fan favorite headshot.
The Jets haven’t had Tanev on their team since 2019, so their social media team enlisted the help of defenseman Dylan Samberg and goaltender Laurent Brossoit instead.
With 103 blocked shots in 73 games, Samberg continues to get the job done.
With the next full social eclipse in North America not coming back until 2044 and 2045, it seems these social media teams made the most of it.
