Oprah Shuts Down Rumors of Tension With 'The Color Purple' Star Taraji P. Henson | Complex

Oprah Winfrey, the queen of talk and media mogul, has finally addressed the explosive controversy surrounding Taraji P. Henson. It seems Oprah is diving headfirst into the realm of PR damage control. Why? The stakes are high, especially with growing concerns that people might boycott “The Color Purple.”

Let’s rewind a bit. Taraji P. Henson, the star of Oprah’s latest production of “The Color Purple,” stirred things up by shedding light on significant pay disparities. She disclosed that she almost walked away from the project due to what she perceived as inadequate compensation.

Now, the question arises: Is Oprah’s response a genuine attempt to address the issue, or is it a strategic move to salvage the reputation of “The Color Purple”? The internet began calling out Oprah, drawing parallels to what Mo’Nique had warned about years ago.

Taraji took to Instagram to assert that Oprah genuinely supported her. Yet, fans speculated that Taraji might have been compelled by the studio to post the message. The timing of this entire drama, just days before the release of “The Color Purple,” raises eyebrows.

Oprah herself broke her silence on the matter in an Instagram post. However, here’s the twist: she not only addressed Taraji’s comment but also turned off comments on not just that post but all her shared posts over the past couple of weeks.

As Oprah attempted to address the controversy surrounding Taraji P. Henson’s comments on low pay, the internet once again turned against her. It appears that the public has lost trust in Oprah.

To provide some context, in the week leading up to the release of the new remake of “The Color Purple,” co-produced by Oprah, Taraji P. Henson brought attention to the issue of pay inequality affecting black actresses. She revealed the challenging situation she faced, almost having to walk away from “The Color Purple” due to attempted lowballing.

This isn’t the first time an actress has spoken about this issue. Viola Davis previously revealed that despite being hailed as the black Meryl Streep, she still doesn’t get paid adequately.

Now that Taraji has spoken out about being lowballed on Oprah’s project, fans are finally giving Mo’Nique credit for publicly going against Oprah. Despite Taraji’s Instagram post praising Oprah, many fans are convinced that Taraji was pressured to post it.

In response, Oprah shared an Instagram post praising Taraji’s portrayal in “The Color Purple,” attempting to deflect negative attention. However, fans continue to call her out, stating that it’s too late for damage control.

Oprah Winfrey Addresses Supposed Taraji P. Henson Feud After ‘The Color Purple’ Star Voiced Concerns About Production

Oprah Winfrey is clearing things up following a string of remarks made by The Color Purple star Taraji P. Henson.

Henson has been opening up about the challenges she has faced in Hollywood despite being an established female actor in the industry. The Empire alum called out the pay disparity and how she had to fight for a driver to take her to the set of the musical.

Winfrey, an executive producer on the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, became a trending topic on social media, with many asking why the media mogul didn’t intervene.

“I heard I was trending yesterday. People were saying I was not supporting Taraji,” Winfrey said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the Golden Globes. “Taraji will tell you herself that I’ve been the greatest champion of this film, championing not only the behind-the-scenes production but also everything that everybody needed.”

She continued, “Whenever I heard that there was something that people needed — I’m not in charge of the budget because that’s Warner Bros., that’s the way the studio system works and we as producers, everybody gets their salary that’s negotiated by your team.”

Winfrey reiterated that whenever she “heard there was a problem with the cars” or “with the food” she would “step in and do whatever I could to make it right,” noting that Henson “would vouch for that and say that it’s true.”

“I am all for everybody being the greatest and meeting the rising of their own life,” she added.

Winfrey also addressed the rumors that there was tension between her and Henson during a photo call at the Empire State Building. The former daytime talk show host said it was particularly cold that day and she was just trying to stay warm.

“There’s no validity to their being a thing between Taraji and I,” Winfrey said.
