Hennessey plans for the F5 Roadster to be the fastest convertible in history.

Hennessey Performance has been tuning cars with big power to go fast since 1991. They’re known mainly for tuning American muscle cars and trucks like the Mustang, Camaro, Challengers, and even the Dodge Viper. In recent years, they’ve made headlines with their limited edition Venom line of hypercars. First came the Venom GT in 2010, which set a top speed record of 270.49 MPH in the coupe and 265.57 MPH in the roadster, which is a record it still holds today. The Venom F5 is its successor, and it aims to reach a top speed of 300MPH. With its limited production, it has attracted a famous buyer.

Famous people buy expensive cars all the time, so it isn’t such a big deal, unless you’re Michael Jordan. The famous basketball legend is one of the greatest players of all time, and he has quite an impressive car collection. He needs a car that would match his status, and the American-made Hennessey Venom F5 hypercar would do just that. While he has owned expensive cars like the Bugatti Veyron, His Venom F5 Roadster might be the most expensive car in his collection.

The Venom F5 Roadster Starts At $3 Million

Close

The Hennessey Venom F5 is a limited edition vehicle with a total of just 90 cars to be produced with a starting price of $2.1 million. But that price is for the coupe model. The Roadster models are even more expensive, with a starting price of around $3 million. These Roadster versions are even rarer than the coupe, and that is why they’re more expensive. But for someone like Michael Jordan, he would want nothing but the very best, and he opted for the most expensive version, which cost him $3.5 million.

He bought the Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Roadster, which is the fastest and most track-focused open-top version of the Venom F5. The reason for choosing the Roadster version is because of his height. Tall people can sometimes find it hard to fit in cars like this. Being six feet, six inches tall, MJ was never going to comfortably fit in the coupe version, so the Roadster was his natural choice. The Venom F5 Roadster Revolution also has some extensive changes when compared to the regular models.

Changes Made to the F5 Revolution Roadster

For starters, John Hennessy has said that every F5 will be unique to its owner with no two cars sharing the same visual specifications. This particular car has some visual, mechanical, and aerodynamic changes made to it. Being a Roadster, the F5 has a removable hardtop that converts the car into a convertible when it’s off and gives it an open-air feel.

Since it is a track-focused car, there are many visual changes made for the improvement of aerodynamic downforce. These include:

Bigger front and rear splitters
Aggressive dive planes in the front
A huge fixed wing at the rear
High-mounted central air scoop.

All of these changes improve the car’s downforce while the roof scoop feeds fresh air into the engine, especially when the roof is off. There were some mechanical changes to match the improved downforce, which included retuned suspension, new lighter wheels, and even a track telemetry system, to record and improve your lap times.

Breaking speed records requires a very powerful engine and, in traditional American fashion, the Venom F5 is powered by a big displacement engine. It is powered by a pushrod 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-8 known as FURY. It is the most powerful American production car in history with 1,817 horsepower. While most fast cars are switching to all-wheel drive to effectively transfer that power to the road, the Venom F5 is rear-wheel drive only. All that power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed single-clutch automated transmission.

The combination of a pushrod design and traditional cross-plane crank setup makes this car sound like a regular V-8. Most cars at this level use fancy high-revving flat-plane crank engines that have exotic sounds. FURY is an American engineering masterpiece with its polished Aluminum cylinder head on display from the transparent engine cover. But they have built this engine with the traditional American recipe with its distinct deep V-8 rumble.

Limited To Just 12 Cars

90 Venom F5s is already a very limited production number. When it comes to the roadsters, only 30 will be made. But Michael Jordan’s car is even rarer. Only 12 units of the track-focused revolution Roadster will be made and Michael owns one of those 12 cars, which is very special. As mentioned earlier, each car will be unique to its owner with the exterior and interior color combination.

John Hennessey Personally Delivered The Car to Michael Jordan

Apart from buying a Venom F5, Michael Jordan and John Hennessey have been friends for a very long time. All customers have a great experience when taking delivery of their Venom F5s, but since John was friends with Michael, John decided to go with his team and personally deliver the car. It was delivered to Michael Jordan’s private Florida golf club, The Grove XXIII. This was the first time his unique specification was unveiled to the public.

Two separate Instagram posts made by Hennessey never really showed the full spec of the car. One showed the car under covers with the obvious huge wings, and another image showed Michael and John posing for a picture in front of the car. But with those details, the covered car with the huge wing shows the silhouette of a Revolution Roadster, and another picture shows the roof off with the dive planes. Michael’s car has a fully exposed carbon fiber body with yellow accents, and the same theme is carried inside the car. This particular car is the official Roadster Revolution that is shown on Hennessey’s website.

This Is The World’s Fastest Convertible

The Venom F5 was set to break the production vehicle top speed record with a target of 300 MPH. But that target has already been beaten by Bugatti, but only done in one direction. While Bugatti was the first to reach 300 MPH, it wasn’t done on a two-way-run, which leaves the current record unbroken. Koenigsegg still holds that record from the 2017 run in the Agera RS with an average of 277.9 MPH.

Hennessey held the record for the fastest convertible with the Venom GT spyder, but that record was broken by the Agera RS since it was also a convertible. The Venom GT Spyder made 1451 horsepower, which was 207 horsepower more than the standard car. This helped Hennessey achieve its record of 265.57 MPH. They claim it could have gone faster, but one of the three high-capacity fuel pumps was faulty. They plan to reclaim the title with the F5 Roadster.

How Hennessey Plans To Achieve This Record

High-speed tests have already been conducted on the F5 during development, and they achieved a top speed of 271.6 MPH with ease. This already beat the previous speed of the Venom GT. Since the F5 makes more power than any other combustion engine hypercar in its class, it is safe to say it will be able to hit the 300 MPH barrier and achieve its two-way record.

The Roadster version aims to reclaim the title of the fastest convertible on earth. With that much power and aero profile, it may very well achieve it. Since Hennessey claims the Venom Spyder GT was faulty during its run, the F5 Roadster should have no issue beating that record since it already has more power than its predecessor. If that is achieved, Michael Jordan and other Venom F5 owners will have the fastest roadster in the world.
