Jennifer Lawrence has defended her Meryl Streep comment at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards claiming “you can’t offend Meryl Streep” after a joke made as she picked up her award for Best Actress award didn’t go down too well with some fans and in particular Lindsay Lohan.

The stunning 22 year-old said “Look what it says, ‘I beat Meryl,” while picking up her gong for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ at the star studded ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The actress claimed she was merely quoting Bette Midler from movie ‘First Wives Club’ and never meant to cause offence to the actress, who was nominated for her role in ‘Hope Springs’. Lindsay Lohan, who was tweeting throughout the ceremony, was one who didn’t get the reference.

She wrote: “no1 (sic) should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep,”

Lawrence told David Letterman during an appearance on The Late Show: “I can’t believe nobody’s ever done it before.

“It was so perfect and I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take to the Twitterverse – is that what they call it, the Twitterverse? I’m not on Twitter– Twitter is very upset.”

Replying to the uproar, Jen even joked that she was so shocked at the reaction she felt like making a public statement: “I wanted to make a public statement like ‘Hey idiots. It’s a quote from a movie!’”

With a Best Actress Oscar nomination for the same role, let’s hope she tries something a little less controversial if she wins next month!
