Millie Bobby Brown’s wedding will be officiated by her Stranger Things ‘Papa,’ Matthew Modine
“It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to join two people in holy matrimony,” Modine said of Brown’s upcoming nuptials to Jake Bongiovi.
Matthew Modine, who plays a twisted father figure to Brown on the hit sci-fi series Stranger Things, revealed in a new interview that he’ll be officiating his costar’s upcoming nuptials to Jon Bon Jovi’s son.
“I have one of those licenses to get people married,” Modine told Access Daily, “and Millie thought it’d be great, and then Jake said it would be a great idea, so I wrote the wedding vows and they loved what I wrote for them to join hands and to become husband and wife.”
Modine, who has been married to Caridad Rivera for 44 years, added, “It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to join two people in holy matrimony.”

As Stranger Things fans well know, Modine plays Dr. Martin Brenner, a mysterious government scientist who has a complicated relationship with Brown’s telekinetic heroine, Eleven, who famously refers to him as “Papa.” So far Modine and Brown have shared the screen in seasons 1, 2, and 4.
Brown and Bongiovi announced their engagement in April, after two and a half years of dating. The two have not revealed when their trip down the aisle will be.
In the meantime, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is in production now. Though Modine’s character seemed to meet his end in season 4, the actor also spoke to Access Daily about whether it might be possible for the character to return in the final season, perhaps in a flashback setting.
“I think the interesting thing about Dr. Brenner is, how did he get that job? How do you go to the government and say, ‘I want to do these experiments with young kids and teach them psychic powers and stuff,'” Modine said.
“So my question is always, was he number zero? Was he the first guy? Did he possess that kind of power to be able to teach people?
And there was a moment in season 4 where [Eleven] tries to use her power against me, and I say, ‘You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?’ And I thought that that was opening the door to the possibility that [there’s more].”
