While the Fast & Furious timeline is already convoluted as it is, it wouldn’t be surprising if the saga went for prequel movies after Fast X, Part 2.
SUMMARY
A Fast & Furious prequel could explore Dom, Mia, and Jakob’s life as a family before the death of their father, Jack Toretto.
A prequel could delve into the backstory of Dom and Letty’s relationship and how they met before the events of The Fast and the Furious.
A prequel could showcase Dom’s time in prison and the impact it had on him and his family, as well as Jakob’s exile following Jack Toretto’s death.
A Fast & Furious prequel movie or TV show could help revitalize the franchise after the main saga is concluded, and there are multiple Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner stories that could be covered.
The Fast & Furious movie timeline begins in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, but many important events in the lives of Dom and Brian took place before they met each other. While some of those have been explored through flashbacks or lines of dialogue, most of them could still work as the premise for a series of movies or TV shows.
When the Fast Saga will end remains to be confirmed, as it is unclear whether the upcoming Fast & Furious 11, currently titled Fast X, Part 2, will conclude the stories of Dom and his family.
Regardless, it is safe to say the main saga is finally reaching its ending after many promises of “one last ride.” Still, considering how big of an IP Fast & Furious is, it would not be surprising to see the franchise returning in the form of prequels with recast Fast & Furious characters.
10. Dom, Mia, & Jakob’s Time As A Family Before Jack’s Death
Jakob’s character was a Fast & Furious retcon
Dominic Toretto was 12 years old when his father died, at least according to the timeline of events presented in F9. While having an entire show or movie about child versions of the Toretto siblings would not make sense, it would be interesting to see more of Dom, Mia, and Jakob as a family before Jack’s death.
Everything about Jakob’s past in Fast & Furious is a retcon, as the character was created for F9. Therefore, a Fast & Furious prequel could perhaps feature some flashback sequences showing what the Toretto family looked like before the death of Jack Toretto.
9. How Dom & Letty Met
They have been together since before The Fast And The Furious
Dom and Letty had known each other for years by the time Brian met them in The Fast and the Furious. Dom already knew Letty before the death of his father, but it is unclear when exactly they started to date compared to when Dom was sent to prison for the first time.
Regardless, the beginning of Dom and Letty’s relationship was marked by a street race in which they both got involved in an accident. This accident, which gave Dominic Toretto a scar, is described in Fast & Furious 6. Dom and Letty’s relationship is one of the pillars of Fast & Furious, and it could be further explored in a prequel.
8. Dominic Toretto’s Time In Prison
Dom was arrested shortly after his father’s death
Dominic Toretto was sent to prison for two years after attacking Kenny Linder, a racer who made fun of Jack Toretto’s death, with a wrench. Dom’s arrest would be a major turning point in the character’s life and the Toretto family as a whole. A Fast & Furious prequel could show Dom’s time in prison while also highlighting how difficult those years were to the family, especially Mia.
This would work even better in a serialized format, with a Fast & Furious prequel series following Dom in jail for several episodes. This period is also when Jakob made a name for himself in the street race world.
7. Jakob Toretto’s Exile
Jakob went away after Jack Toretto’s death
Despite being a new addition to the Fast & Furious family, Jakob Toretto is perhaps the character with the most potential for a prequel. From the two years in which Dom was in jail to his time as a rogue agent who wanted revenge against his brother, Jakob has a quite tumultuous backstory.
While some of this was already covered in F9, a Fast & Furious prequel could follow Jakob’s lonely trajectory following his fallout with Dom, who believed Jakob was to blame for their father’s death. A Jakob prequel could cover how he met Mr. Nobody and his early work for the Agency.
6. The Beginning Of Dominic Toretto’s Life Of Crime
There is a gap between Dom’s release and The Fast and The Furious
Before Dominic Toretto was a special agent working for secret agencies to protect the world from hackers and nuclear weapons, he was stealing DVDs in Los Angeles. There is a gap between Dom leaving the prison and him becoming the leader of a criminal group whose operation was being investigated by the police.
Considering how Fast & Furious is criticized for having become ridiculous after a relatively grounded start, revisiting Dom’s original group would be a fun way to bring the franchise back to its roots. A low-stakes, heist Fast & Furious prequel movie may be exactly what the franchise needs.
5. Brian O’Conner’s Early Life
Not much has been shown about Brian’s past
Whereas a lot has been revealed or even shown about Dominic Toretto’s past, there is surprisingly little information about Brian O’Conner’s life before the events of The Fast and the Furious. Apart from his friendship with Roman Pearce and the fact he doesn’t remember much about his father, Brian’s childhood and teenage years were never covered in Fast & Furious.
While the most important events in Brian’s life come after he joins the LAPD, it would be interesting to see more of the character’s origins. A Brian prequel could also show the beginning of his friendship with Roman leading up to their eventual fallout.
4. Brian Joining The LAPD
A key moment in Brian’s story
Though Brian spent a few years as a fugitive, the character was part of either the LAPD or the FBI during most of the Fast & Furious movies. Therefore, seeing what led Brian to join the LAPD following his time in juvenile detention and what his first couple of years in the Force looked like could make for a good prequel.
One of the best things about Brian’s character is how he tries to conciliate his job with his beliefs, often choosing to break the law if means to help the people he trusts. Showing more of Brian’s life as a policeman would add even more weight to the decisions he makes after meeting Dom.
3. Roman’s Arrest & His Fallout With Brian
It took years for Roman to forgive Brian
Although Brian was not directly involved with Roman’s arrest, the fact that Roman’s best friend was now a cop while he was getting in trouble for the things they used to do together broke their friendship. Roman and Brian are not on good terms at the beginning of 2 Fast 2 Furious, and they only begin to reconnect midway through the film.
A Fast & Furious prequel set during that period, be it a movie or a TV show, could have Roman as one of its main characters. Roman and Brian’s bond predates Brian’s relationship with Dom, meaning there are many stories to be told about the former.
2. What Happened To Dom After The Fast And The Furious
This was only briefly shown during Los Bandoleros
A story about Dom set after the events of The Fast and the Furious would obviously be a sequel to the first movie, but it would still work as a prequel to the rest of the Fast & Furious universe.
Apart from Los Bandoleros, a short film released alongside Fast & Furious (2009) showing Dom and his crew living in the Dominican Republic, there is a significant gap in Dom’s story between the first and fourth movies. It is well established that Dom was on the run, having lived in at least three different countries during those eight years. Therefore, a prequel would have eight years’ worth of stories to cover.
1. How Han & Dom Met
One of Fast & Furious’ most important friendships
One of the most overlooked friendships in Fast & Furious is that of Dom and Han, who first appeared together in the same movie in Fast & Furious (2009). Han was one of Los Badoleroes, having participated in the Dominican Republic jobs and later becoming a key member of the Fast & Furious family.
However, the beginning of that friendship, which even led to Dom going to Tokyo as depicted in Tokyo Drift, was never shown. It is known that Dom and Han met in Mexico somewhere between The Fast and the Furious and Fast & Furious 4, which shows how much there is to explore in that eight-year window.
