Gerard Butler’s Suspenders Nearly Killed Hilary Swank Filming P.S. I Love You

Olympus Has Fallen actor Gerard Butler reveals he almost killed co-star Hilary Swank with his suspenders while filming the 2007 movie P.S. I Love You.

Actor Gerard Butler reveals a frightening wardrobe malfunction on the set of P.S. I Love You sent Hilary Swank to the hospital.

As reported by Variety, Butler appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and discussed the traumatic moment on the set of the 2007 romantic film.

While filming for a scene, Butler revealed that the crocodile clip on his suspenders flew off and slashed Swank in the head. “I mean, I cut her open.

You could even see the teeth of the [crocodile],” said Butler. “She had to get taken to the hospital. I’m just sitting there in my boxer shorts and my boots and a pair of socks, and I just started crying.”

Butler went on to explain his apparent habit of causing freak accidents on-set. Most recently, he recalled accidentally burning himself while filming the 2023 action film Plane.

Butler confessed to rubbing his face with a mysterious green liquid, which caused his eyes, nose, throat and mouth to burn. He eventually discovered the substance was “essentially phosphoric acid” and caused him to suffer burns.

Released in 2007, P.S. I Love You follows Holly Reilly-Kennedy (Swank) after her husband Gerry (Butler) dies from a brain tumor. Before his death, Gerry arranged several people to deliver letters to Holly to bring comfort to his grieving wife.

However, Holly unknowingly develops feelings for her late husband’s childhood best friend. In addition to Swank and Butler, P.S. I Love You stars Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr. and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Before P.S. I Love You, Swank gained recognition for playing protagonist Julie Pierce in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid. The franchise’s fourth installment marked the first film without Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso but featured Pat Morita in his familiar role as Mr. Miyagi.

Swank remains one of the few original Karate Kid stars absent from Netflix’s sequel series Cobra Kai. Despite fans rallying for her return, the show’s creators have reportedly not asked her to join Cobra Kai.

“I’m not in Cobra Kai, no one’s asked me to be in Cobra Kai,” said Swank. “No one’s called me, but it’s so funny, isn’t it, that’s the one thing I get asked the most and no one’s called me?” In the past, Cobra Kai has included past characters like Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) and added Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) in Season 5. On Jan. 20, Netflix announced that Cobra Kai would end with Season 6. Therefore, it’s the last chance for Swank’s involvement.
