Constantine 2 has just received its first update in months from a producer. The DC Universe is being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and while John Constantine has yet to be announced as one of the DCU’s canon characters, the Hellblazer is set to return to the big screen. Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 is being worked on as a DC Elseworlds movie, and a new update on the project has been shared.

Speaking to Comicbook.comConstantine producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared his hopes that Keanu Reeves’ DC sequel will move forward, comparing it to his latest superhero film venture — Madame Web.

Bonaventura said that he “hope it does, because it’s a great character” when asked about Constantine 2 moving forward. His comparison between John Constantine and Madame Web boiled down to both characters being singular. Check out the full quote below:

“I hope it does, because it’s a great character. Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie. It’s such an alternative kind of character.

It’s what really attracted me to Madame Web , was the singularity of the character, that idea that she is going to become blind and that she is going to become this other thing was really attractive.

What To Expect From Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2

John Constantine Has A High Bar To Clear

Reeves first played DC’s Hellblazer in 2005’s Constantine. The actor has since never stopped trying to get Constantine 2 made and return as his DC character.

After a long wait, the September 2022 announcement that Reeves’ long-awaited Constantine 2 was in the works shocked fans. Now, the movie has received a slew of updates that point to the direction it is heading in.

Constantine 2 will take into account Reeves’ age, showing what an older John Constantine is up to.

The first major detail about Constantine 2 is that it will be an Elseworlds movie, meaning Reeves’ version of the character will not be part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Gunn’s Elseworlds comments have also raised the bar for Constantine 2.

According to the DCU’s creative chief, “It’s got to be something really special for us to tell that story outside of our regular continuity, and to spend the money on it to make it.” Given how development continues on Constantine 2, it seems like the movie has a good chance of being something special.

Constantine 2 will also be a truly R-rated movie. While the original Constantine received an R rating, director Francis Lawrence has revealed that the film was initially developed as a PG-13 film due to the studio’s request, not making the most of the darker tone that would have benefited Constantine. With creative freedom and no need to have the larger DCU in mind, Constantine 2 can give Reeves the dark supernatural story that he deserves.
