Megan Fox’s childhood was difficult, filled with separation, sickness, bullying, and mental health issues, yet was crucial to the star she is now.
Born in Tennessee, Megan Fox knew she wanted to be an actress since she was a child. At the age of five, she started taking drama classes, and during her early teens, she started modeling and acting. Her big break was in 2007 when she starred in “Transformers”. Afterward, her career skyrocketed and Fox went on to lead her own film, “Jennifer’s Body.”
That’s not to say that her rise to stardom was smooth or quick.
On the contrary, Fox had to deal with a tough childhood and a lot of pressure as a young woman in Los Angeles. To become the amazing woman and actress we know Fox as, she’s endured some hardships, especially during her early life, which wasn’t particularly great. Megan Fox’s childhood was difficult, filled with separation, sickness, bullying, and mental health issues, yet crucial to the star she is now.
Here’s how Megan Fox’s childhood shaped her.
Megan Fox’s Parents Got Divorced When She Was Young
At the age of three, her parents got divorced and in a GQ interview, Fox talked about how her parents’ divorce affected her.
She said, “As a child, you think everyone who’s famous is very wealthy and very powerful. I felt like, once I achieved that success then all of my internal issues would be solved, and I would be this really confident person. And I’m not. It’s not just physical insecurity. It’s also a feeling of not being accepted and wanting to be. Of course, I think that has something to do with my parents’ divorce and not seeing my dad, and always feeling rejected. You don’t ever really get past that.”
Following that divorce, her mother remarried and moved to Florida. Her stepfather was very strict, and boyfriends or even friends weren’t allowed over. That was just the nudge Fox needed to unleash her rebellious self.
When her mother told her not to dye her hair, she used Sun-In. When Fox got herself in trouble for stealing her mother’s car, she just stole it again. In that way, her childhood and home life have shaped her to be a daredevil who’s not afraid of being herself.
Megan Fox Struggled With Body Image And Physical Health
Although fans think Fox is in great shape these days, she hasn’t always loved her body. The actress has opened up before about being very insecure and having body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is basically when someone gets obsessed with their unnoticeable flaws. However, that wasn’t the first time that Fox has discussed her body.
Megan has opened up before about going on a strict diet in 2009 for her leading role in “Jennifer’s Body”.
She lost 30 pounds for the film and shortly after, she got really sick to the point where her hair started falling. That was a breaking point to start taking care of herself and turn her life around.
Megan Fox Was Second-Guessed by Her Mother and Schoolmates
When it comes to her dream of being an actress, her mother wasn’t really all that supportive. Fox admitted that her mother didn’t believe that she would really make it as an actress. That comes as a shock because knowing Fox, one would believe she’s always been a star. However, that’s not the case. She was also bullied at school and wasn’t all that popular like her character, Carla, in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.”
According to Digital Spy, Megan admitted she had been bullied as a child. She confessed, “I was not ever for a second popular. Everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast.” In school, Fox ate lunch in the bathroom and was even made fun of for wanting to be a famous actress. Guess who’s laughing now?
Fox Wrestled With Mental Health Issues
The actress discussed her mental health in an interview with CR Fashion Book.
Fox said, “I came into the world really bright and sunny and happy. However, at a certain point, I went through some trauma in childhood and I developed a pretty severe eating disorder and manic depression, which runs in my family, so there was definitely some wrestling with chemical imbalance going on.”
Fox has opened up before about her mental health. She revealed that she’s had to resort to professionals to help with her obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). On mental disorders, Fox said, “I constantly struggle with the idea that I think I’m a borderline personality. Or that I have bouts of mild schizophrenia. I definitely have some kind of mental problem and I haven’t pinpointed what it is.”
The Good In Megan Fox’s Childhood
She learned to speak in tongues around the age of 8 in church, which she absolutely loved. Another fun fact about Megan Fox’s childhood is that if it wasn’t for “The Wizard of Oz,” Fox wouldn’t have known that she wanted to be an actress.
After she watched the film, she asked her mother to call her Dorothy, and when her mother told her that Dorothy is a character and not a real person, Fox decided she wanted to be an actress. And that is something everyone is glad for.
