2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the most beloved films in the Max Max series which stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead. The direction, writing, action scenes, musical scores, and acting performances of the films all received favorable reviews from critics.

In a recent interview, Chris Hemsworth discussed working on the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, and said that it was the best experience of his career. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were NOT the first choice

Director George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, released in 2015, seventeen months after the schedule for the movie was wrapped, is based on the torturous development history. Kyle Buchanan, author of Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road revealed that in the early 2000s, the actors Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were not considered for the part.

Buchanan said that the director at the time seriously toyed with the idea of having a power couple at a time Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play Max Rockatansky and Furiosa. James Nicholas, Miller’s assistant at that time, said “I remember putting Brad Pitt’s face on Mel’s Road Warrior body, just to see what it would look like.” The characters, were later, portrayed by Hardy and Theron respectively.

According to various reports, Hardy and Theron, just like Max and Furiosa, could not find a common language and did not bond well enough. Buchanan’s book, detailed the dynamics of their strained relationship, along with actress Zoe Kravitz admitting that they did not gel up well.

The Oscar-winning actress acknowledged that she frequently disagreed with Hardy to the point where she insisted producer Denise Di Novi attend the shoot to prevent any further disrespectful incidents with the actor. It was noted that until they were in front of the camera, they even objected to speaking and eye contact.

When everyone was preparing to film one of the scenes in the truck, Theron and Hardy got into their biggest argument. Theron waited in her car and wouldn’t get out until Hardy arrived because he was running late for the shoot.  According to a member of the camera department, when the actor came, the actress was already mad that she went ahead and screamed “Fine the f***ing c**t a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew”, to Hardy.

However, after the end of the filming, the tension between the actors subsided and Tom even sent Charlize a gift – a self-portrait with a note. The note said: “You are an absolute nightmare, but you are also f***ing awesome. I’ll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.”

In an interview, the actress went ahead to acknowledge that she never really appreciated the director or respected his view until she finally saw the film and said, “I went like ‘Oh my God, this is what was in his head the whole time and I couldn’t hear it’. And so it’s the one movie where I go, ‘If I had another opportunity, I’d get a little bit more of what he tried to do in the first one.’”
